Learner Driver Insurance

Learner Driver Insurance

What Is Learner Driver Insurance?

Learner driver insurance is short-term comprehensive cover for provisional licence holders who want extra driving practice outside of formal lessons. All you need is access to a car and a qualified supervising driver — a friend or family member who is over 25, has held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years, and has been a UK resident for at least 2 years. It is a cheaper alternative to expensive driving lessons and lets you build confidence behind the wheel at your own pace.

UK Sure provides learner driver insurance in partnership with G-Shorty, offering total flexibility from 1 hour to 24 weeks. Choose hourly, daily, or weekly cover depending on how much practice you need. Policies are fully comprehensive with a maximum car value of £50,000, and cover protects the car owner's no claims discount — so your parents or friends are not penalised if you have to make a claim.

Learner driver insurance is available for provisional licence holders aged 17 to 21 with no convictions, no claims, and no penalty points.

Frequently asked questions

1. Can I drive by myself with learner driver insurance?

No. Learner driver insurance only covers you while supervised by a qualified driver. Your supervisor must be over 25, have held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years, be a UK resident for at least 2 years, and have no DR-coded convictions (drink or drug driving) in the past 5 years. They must sit in the front passenger seat at all times.

2. What happens when I pass my driving test?

Your learner driver policy stops immediately when you pass your test. You will need to arrange your own annual car insurance before driving. There is a 3-hour grace period after your practical test that covers the supervising driver for a specific journey — such as driving you home from the test centre.

3. Does learner driver insurance protect the car owner's no claims discount?

Yes. Your learner driver policy is completely separate from the car owner's insurance. Any claims are made on your policy, not theirs. This is one of the main reasons learner driver insurance is popular — it lets you practise without putting a parent's or friend's no claims bonus at risk.

4. How much does learner driver insurance cost?

Costs vary depending on your age, the car, and how long you need cover. However, short-term learner cover is significantly cheaper than being added to an annual policy as a named driver — especially for younger drivers who would increase the annual premium substantially. 5. Can I get learner insurance on my own car?

Yes. If you own the car and hold a provisional licence, you can take out learner driver insurance on your own vehicle. The car must be covered by an underlying insurance policy, have a valid MOT, and not be SORN. You still need a qualified supervising driver with you when driving.

6. What cars can I drive with learner driver insurance?

You can drive private cars up to £50,000 in value, subject to insurance group limits. The car must not be imported, left-hand drive, or heavily modified. It must have a maximum of 5 seats, a valid MOT, and an existing insurance policy in force. Commercial vehicles, vans, and vehicles that are SORN or seized are not eligible.
