Impounded Car Insurance

Impounded Car Insurance

What Is Impounded Car Insurance?

Impounded car insurance is a specialist 30-day policy designed to release a vehicle that has been seized by the police and taken to a compound. Standard car insurance does not cover impounded vehicles — the fine print excludes them. To get your car back, you need a policy that includes a CID (Confirmation of Insurance Document) code, which proves to the compound that your vehicle is legitimately insured.

Under Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, police have the legal power to seize any vehicle driven without valid insurance or by someone without a valid driving licence. Once impounded, you have just 14 days to collect your car. After that, it can be crushed or sold at auction. Storage fees of around £20–£26 per day apply from day one, so acting quickly saves you real money.

UK Sure provides impounded car insurance for all licence types — full UK, provisional, European, and international. We also cover drivers with motoring convictions (including IN10 for driving without insurance), claims history, or pending court cases. Need a named driver on your policy? We can arrange that too. Your certificate with CID code is emailed within minutes of payment and is accepted at every UK police compound.

Frequently asked questions

1. How much does impounded car insurance cost?

The cost depends on your vehicle, driving history, and licence type. 30-day specialist cover is competitively priced — enter your registration for an instant quote or call us on 01323 416706. We cover drivers with convictions, claims history, and all licence types.

2. How long do I have to collect my impounded car?

You have 14 days from the date of seizure to collect your vehicle, as stated on the S.165 notice given to you at the roadside. After 14 days, the police can legally crush or sell your car at auction. Storage fees of around £20–£26 per day apply from the day your car is impounded, so the sooner you act, the less it costs.

3. What documents do I need to release my impounded car?

You will need: your seizure notice (Form 3708), proof of insurance covering at least 30 days with a CID code (we email this to you), a valid driving licence, the V5C logbook proving ownership, proof of address dated within the last 3 months, a valid MOT certificate, and payment for the impound release fee. We send a full checklist with your policy so you don't forget anything.

4. Can I get impounded car insurance with a motoring conviction?

Yes. UK Sure works with specialist insurers who cover drivers with motoring convictions including IN10 (driving without insurance), drink driving offences, and other endorsements. We also cover drivers with a poor claims history, pending convictions, or driving bans — speak to our team on 01323 416706.

5. How do I find out where my impounded car is being held?

Use the free Towed Vehicle Tracing Service (TRACE) by calling 0300 077 0100. This 24-hour helpline confirms whether your vehicle has been towed and which compound is holding it. The information is also on your seizure notice (Form 3708) if you received one at the roadside.
